Sisters in Crime Desert Sleuths Chapter Anthology – Book 10
The 2023 Desert Sleuths anthology SOWEST: WRONG TURN will feature member-authored mystery and crime short stories. See below for theme and other details.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
Membership Requirement: Author must be a 2022 and 2023 Sisters in Crime National and Desert Sleuths member in good standing. Any accepted author who does not renew SinC National and Desert Sleuths memberships in 2023 will be dropped from the anthology. [Not a member? Join Now!]
Theme: The story must feature a wrong turn–literal or figurative–that leads to danger. Timeframe can be contemporary, futuristic, or historical.
Location: The central storyline must take place in, and be clearly recognizable as, Arizona.
Word Count: 3,000 words maximum
Formatting: 12 pt Times New Roman font, double-spaced with half-inch paragraph indents (not tabs), saved in Word format (.doc, .rtf, or .docx). Please put story title and page numbering in header or footer.
Blind Submissions: Your name should not appear in the story file. In Word, go to File/Info/Inspect Document and have it remove all “Document Properties and Personal Information.”
# Submissions: Authors may submit up to two original, unpublished (print, self, e-format) stories written to the theme. If both stories from an author are accepted, only one story will appear. Please note that webzine and other online venues constitutes “published.”
Respect for Others: The story must be sensitive to people of all backgrounds, in alignment with Sisters in Crime’s goals for Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging. You can find information for incorporating JEDI-B principles in the Craft section on this page at the Sisters in Crime website.
Submit: The deadline is 11:59 p.m. (MST), January 31, 2023. Email your properly formatted story to our anthology coordinator at anthology-submissions@desertsleuths.com, with the Subject: 2023 Submission, Story Title, Your Name. In the body of your email, give the story title, word count, and your name.
Tentative Release Date: September 2023 at the Desert Sleuths WriteNow! 2023 Conference.
These guidelines will be strictly followed. If any submission does not meet ALL criteria, it will be automatically disqualified from consideration. No exceptions.
Author Compensation: Twenty-five dollars ($25) or two (2) complimentary copies of the printed anthology.
Publishing Rights: DS Publishing, on behalf of the Sisters in Crime Desert Sleuths Chapter, retains the first publishing rights and non-exclusive worldwide printing and electronics rights to the accepted stories. The copyright remains with the author, and DS Publishing will establish that copyright for each author. Full details of author rights and when author can publish a story that appears in the anthology will be detailed in the contract.
Publishing Format: The anthology will be published in eBook and print formats available from Amazon. The chapter will make specially priced print copies available for authors to purchase and give as gifts. These must be ordered through the chapter and not directly from Amazon.
